This class was full of firsts for me, as far as media goes. I never used a pen that you need to dip into the ink. I never used a brush with ink. I never mixed ink with water. I never used charcoal pencil, and I hadn't used a mechanical pen for over twenty years. But, at least I've heard of those things!
I never heard of a Conte crayon before taking this class. Crayola, yes, Conte, no. Conte is a brand name and their crayon is a stick that is about 3" long and square in its profile. We used the crayon for our in-class assignments though half of the semester and I struggled the entire time. I never knew what would come out when I placed it to the paper.
This drawing was something of a disaster. Aside from my own shortcomings and my struggles with the crayon, I selected a bright white paper that did not have the texture I was looking for. I did look, but did not find paper with a grain that appeared to be like the original. I re-worked it once, but the results are not something that I'm proud to show people.
The artist is Georges Seurat, 1859 - 1891. The picture is 18 7/8" high x 12 3/8" wide.
